Futility

“Tell me, Tool, what dominates your thoughts?”
The Imass shrugged before replying. “I think of futility, Adjunct.”
“Do all Imass think about futility?”
“No. Few think at all.”
“Why is that?”
The Imass leaned his head to one side and regarded her. “Because Adjunct, it is futile.”

Poetry readings

I like poems, but reading them is too exhausting. I’m suited towards reading long stories—reading one thousand page book is easier for me than reading ten short-stories/poems that are ten pages long. It’s difficult to switch from one story to the next, from one poem to another, sequentially. Each poem is unique you see.

Cubism.

Aaron Swartz (part of the reddit team) on working in an office. On a related note, see Programming Outside The Cube over at c2 wiki. I’m not yet qualified enough to comment on my experiences…

On zeal.

The ever trusty Wordnet defines zeal as:
a feeling of strong eagerness (usually in favour of a person or cause); excessive fervour to do something or accomplish some end; prompt willingness.
I’ve always had one problem with zeal—I don’t trust it at all. I can’t shake off the feeling of being scammed when someone is too [...]

Open Source Java

Good news—Java is now open source.

Financial Planning

Now that I’ve started earning, I’ve realised that I’m terrible with money. I can’t remember where I spent it, don’t think before buying anything, and have no restraint. OK, I do have a little restraint, but not nearly enough it seems.

My friends seem to be different from me. I know people who’ve already invested a [...]

Humanity

Wired’s Tony Long writes about the lack of humanity in today’s world. It’s damn hard to try and make a difference though.

Spin

Spin is a tremendous ride throughout. I’ve read only a couple of the other Hugo nominees for this year, but I’m guessing the prize was well deserved this year.

The story is huge—it spans 4 billion years after all. I’ll give away some of it here, not big spoilers, but if you want to read the [...]

Rails

I’m currently playing around with Ruby on Rails, and trying to have some fun. And maybe even build an app if everything goes right.

IRC fun

This has got to be the best IRC story ever. Sean Egan, Gaim’s project lead, lost his wallet. Some guy found it, and here’s a log of the IRC conversation they had. Classic, especially if it’s true.
